Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Stokes Wood Primary School is proud to be an inclusive school, valuing the individuality of all children.

At Stokes Wood Primary School we are committed to equal opportunities for all our pupils. We use our best endeavours to remove barriers to learning and provide an appropriate and high-quality education for all children which enables them to:

  • Explore and understand the world around them
  • Be curious, ask questions and seek answers as they learn
  • Listen and communicate with kindness and respect
  • Grow into healthy, balanced individuals committed to lifelong learning and positive change.

We have the highest aspirations and expectations for all pupils, including those with SEND.

Our aim to foster a community where parents and those working in school have a mutual trust and confidence in each other, created through clear, consistent approaches to communication and collaborative working, to enable the best possible outcomes for children with SEND.

We strive to provide all children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, with a broad, balanced academic and social curriculum, which is accessible and ensures they are fully included in all aspects of school life and feel equally valued and fully part of the school community.

To find out more about how we support pupils with SEND at please read the school SEND Information report and SEND policy.

What should I do if I think my child may have Special Education Needs?

Talk to your child’s class teacher about any concerns you may have. The class teacher will discuss these with the Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator (SENDCo). Alternatively, you can arrange to meet with the SENDCo directly.

What will happen if my child is identified with having special educational needs?

Once your child has been identified as having special educational needs, you will be informed and they will be placed on the Special Educational Needs Register under the category of SEN Support. Your child will receive three reviews and additional meetings (if required) throughout the academic year whilst they are on the SEND register. If they continue to make limited progress or there are ongoing concerns then the school may ask for advice from external agencies.
For those children, who have significant ongoing needs which impact their learning an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) may be applied for. If a child has an EHCP then they will also have an additional annual review and the plan remains with them up to the age of 25, if it is deemed necessary. Children in Year 6 who have an EHCP will have an annual review in the 1st half of the Autumn term to discuss transition to an appropriate secondary provision.

How will the curriculum be matched to my children's needs?

Teachers are responsible and accountable for the progress and development of all pupils in their class. Lessons are adapted to match each child’s needs. Teachers will make reasonable adjustments to the curriculum to meet individual needs through adaptive teaching which could include; practical activities, alternative ways to record learning, scaffolding, small group learning and bespoke interventions.

How will both you and I know how my child's doing?

Teachers complete ongoing assessments for all children during lessons. This information informs planning. Children receiving interventions will have their progress tracked throughout the time they are receiving the support. For children on the SEND register, there will be three reviews over the academic year, where the child's personalised learning plan will be shared and reviewed with you. However, at any point during your child’s time at Stokes Wood Primary School, please feel free to speak with your child’s class teacher if you would like an update on how your child is doing.

What support will there be for my child's wellbeing?

At Stokes Wood, we have an open-door policy and a pastoral team, including an ELSA who are available to meet with parents and children to support any worries or concerns. We work alongside a number of external agencies and are able to signpost families and children to ensure they receive the correct support. Please see the Wellbeing section of the website for more information.
