Science
Intent
At Stokes Wood Primary, our science curriculum inspires curious, motivated and ambitious learners who explore the world with excitement and purpose. We want pupils to think and work like scientists: asking questions, investigating ideas and developing a deep understanding of how science explains the world around us. Through hands-on experiences, children grow in confidence as they observe, experiment and reason scientifically. Our curriculum builds depth of knowledge across biology, chemistry and physics, with oracy being vital to learning so pupils can discuss, explain and justify their thinking using precise scientific vocabulary. We aim to nurture curiosity, critical thinking and care for the environment, preparing pupils to see science as relevant to their everyday lives.
Implementation
Science is taught weekly through the White Rose Science scheme, providing clear progression in both knowledge and working scientifically skills. Teaching is underpinned by research-based pedagogy and Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, with prior learning revisited, concepts introduced in small steps and frequent opportunities for modelling, guided practice and independent enquiry. Pupils learn through practical investigation, discussion and reflection, developing the skills to predict, observe, measure and conclude accurately.
Oracy supports children to explain ideas, use scientific language confidently and evaluate evidence. Learning is enriched through outdoor investigations, STEM projects and cross-curricular links, making science purposeful and engaging. Our House Day activities promote scientific thinking and teamwork, encouraging pupils to apply knowledge to real-life contexts and take responsibility for looking after the world around us.
Impact
By the end of primary school, pupils can ask thoughtful questions, carry out fair tests, record data accurately and draw evidence-based conclusions. They explain scientific concepts with confidence and precision, showing both understanding and enthusiasm. Those working well as scientists are curious, observant and reflective learners who use vocabulary accurately, think critically and apply knowledge flexibly. They show depth of understanding, pride in their progress and a readiness to grow their scientific thinking beyond the classroom. Pupils leave Stokes Wood as more confident young scientists who question, reason and care for the world with curiosity and respect.
