Music
Intent
At Stokes Wood Primary, our music curriculum inspires pupils to be curious, creative and ambitious musicians who experience the joy of performing, composing and listening to music from a wide range of cultures, traditions and periods. Music enables pupils to grow in confidence, self-expression and collaboration while developing cultural awareness and appreciation. Our well-sequenced curriculum builds secure knowledge of the interrelated dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure, allowing pupils to develop increasing technical skill, musical understanding. We aim for all pupils, including those with SEND, to access high-quality musical experiences and achieve well, nurturing a lifelong love of music.
Implementation
The teaching of Music is supported by the Charanga programme, which provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills in listening, singing, playing, composing and performing from EYFS to Year 6. Teaching is supported by strong subject knowledge and draws on research-based pedagogy, including modelling, guided practice, retrieval of prior learning and opportunities for independent application. Lessons balance exploration with structured performance, enabling pupils to rehearse, refine and reflect on their work. Inclusion is central: activities, instruments and outcomes are adapted so that all pupils, including those with SEND, can participate and succeed. Assessment is ongoing through observation, discussion, performance and recordings, allowing teachers to address misconceptions and inform next steps. Pupils develop cultural capital through a wide enrichment offer, including Mass Choir events, performances in the community (eg. local care homes and hospice), school productions, seasonal events for parents, weekly singing assemblies, choir club and Rock Steady concerts. These experiences strengthen confidence, teamwork and a sense of belonging while celebrating pupils’ musical achievements.
Impact
By the end of primary school, pupils listen with discernment, perform with accuracy and expression and compose creatively using a range of instruments and technologies. They use musical vocabulary with growing confidence and demonstrate a secure understanding of how musical elements combine to create effect. Those working well as musicians are reflective, curious and resilient learners who respond to feedback, refine their work and celebrate the achievements of others. Pupil voice and performance outcomes show that pupils make strong progress from their starting points, including those with SEND. Pupils value music as part of school life, demonstrate enjoyment and enthusiasm and leave Stokes Wood as confident, expressive musicians equipped for further study and for lifelong engagement in music.
