PE

Intent

At Stokes Wood Primary, our PE curriculum provides every pupil, including those with SEND, with a broad, balanced and progressive experience across all areas of physical education. From EYFS to Year 6, pupils develop confidence and competence in fundamental movement skills, gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, outdoor adventurous activities (OAA), striking and fielding, net and wall games, target games and activities using both feet and implements. Swimming is included where appropriate to ensure water confidence and safety. Our intent is to nurture physical literacy, enjoyment of movement and an understanding of health, fitness and wellbeing. Pupils learn to master key physical skills and apply them in meaningful contexts so learning is engaging and accessible for all learners, with adaptations made where needed.

Implementation

PE is delivered through a carefully sequenced curriculum that ensures clear progression across all year groups. Medium-term plans outline learning objectives aligned to the National Curriculum, key vocabulary and assessment guidance. Lessons follow a consistent structure of warm-up, skill development, application through games or routines and reflection. Teachers use formative assessment, peer review, self-assessment and observation to support progress for all pupils, adapting tasks, equipment and groupings to ensure full SEND inclusion.
Staff collaborate with PE specialists, shared resources and coaching support to deliver high-quality, inclusive PE using appropriate modelling, scaffolding and differentiation. Our enrichment offer, including the Daily Mile, Sports Day, inter-school competitions, after-school clubs and active break times, ensures that every pupil, including those with SEND, can participate meaningfully and develop physical, social and emotional skills. Partnerships with local coaches and community organisations further broaden experiences and encourage lifelong engagement in physical activity.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is seen in the confidence, competence and enthusiasm pupils show in lessons and beyond. Children develop secure physical skills, tactical understanding and personal qualities such as resilience and teamwork. Progress for all pupils, including those with SEND, is monitored through assessment grids, observation, pupil voice, planning scrutiny and learning walks to ensure high-quality, inclusive practice. By the end of Year 6, pupils are physically literate, able to perform a wide range of skills with control and fluency and understand the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing. They demonstrate positive attitudes towards participation and competition, value teamwork and fairness, and are well prepared for secondary PE and for sustaining active, healthy lifestyles - regardless of their starting points or individual needs.
